OMV Petrom Signed the Contract for the Decommissioning of the Gloria Marine Drilling Platform

Friday 24 May 2019

OMV Petrom started the demolition of the Marine Drilling Glider's self-propelled Gloria drilling platform after 40 years of use.

It is a complex process, which will take place for the first time in Romania. GSP Offshore, a Romanian company, has won the tender for decommissioning the platform, with an estimated value of 5 million euros.

"The Gloria Platform has made a full contribution to the energy supply of Romania. Its cumulative production over the past 20 years is equivalent to over 20 million automobile fillings and the energy needed to heat over 170,000 homes. However, the platform has reached the limit of its lifetime and it needs to be decommissioned. We will make every effort to make this process work efficiently and safely. The Gloria Platform will remain in the history of offshore industry in Romania. We will continue to operate the other six offshore production platforms, which provide more than 16% of the group's output, "said Peter Zeilinger, OMV Petrom's manager for Upstream.

The company took the decision to decommission the Gloria platform in 2018. Subsequently, in the same year, a tender for decommissioning was launched, which was won by GSP Offshore, a Romanian company.

The decommissioning solution consists of restoring the platform lifting / lowering system into operation, positioning the Gloria platform on a carrier bar and dragging it to the shore.

History of the Gloria platform

Between 1976 and 1986, Gloria functioned as a drilling rig, forcing 17 probes with a cumulative length of about 50,000 meters.

In the period 1987-1998, Gloria was used as a production platform for the first offshore production field in Romania - Lebada Est.

Since 1998, the Gloria platform is in its current position, approximately 30 km from the shore, in about 40 meters deep and was used as a production platform. Current production is about 200 barrels per day, accounting for less than 0.15% of OMV Petrom's total production.
